Is this a Full Unit or Mini Unit? North American Birds Part 2 is a Full Unit. Our Full Units are 20 lessons long and designed to take 4-6 weeks to complete. The Student Notebooks from Early Reader and up have 5 pages per day and are designed to cover all your subjects other than math. Mini Units are often shorter in length or in output and while they do have crossover into multiple subjects, they are more focused and intentional on the topic of the unit. They also tend to be more hands-on with less written output. Some families alternate Full Units with Mini Units while others do them alongside one another.
What is this unit about? Get ready to explore the fascinating world of birds with our updated unit, packed with all-new species like woodpeckers, loons, herons, roadrunners, and so much more! We kick things off with Lesson 1, where you'll dive into the life of the American robin—its looks, habitat, diet, life cycle, and even its predators. It’s a great way to see what’s in store for the rest of the unit!
Our notebooking pages keep the original, easy-to-follow style but now come with extra art and guided note-taking to make learning even more fun. You’ll get to map out where robins live across North America, explore interesting proverbs like “the early bird gets the worm,” and learn about the difference between migration and immigration. Plus, you'll discover the many cool functions of feathers!
Each day, you'll dive into geography, looking at things like habitat ranges, cardinal directions, the Great Lakes, mountain ranges, and wetlands. We’ve also got exciting science topics lined up, including echoes, pollination, g-force, keystone species, and the intriguing workings of a woodpecker’s tongue.
You’ll also get to create a report on a bird of your choice, honing your writing skills along the way. By the end, you can share your report with your family, print it out, share it online, or even send it to Gather ‘Round! We’d love to hear from you!
Whether you’re a bird lover or just curious about the feathered friends in your own backyard, this unit is a fantastic way to deepen your knowledge of these amazing creatures. So grab your binoculars and let’s start discovering the winged wonders that await!

Don't miss our add-ons for this unit! We have a North American Birds Printed Planner AND flashcards! Seatwork is also available in digital or print or check out our Seatwork sample below, a complete writing mechanics course with daily copywork, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary.
What should I buy? You can purchase a leveled bundle with one student notebook of your choice and the Teacher's Guide, or the full family bundle that includes all levels with the Teacher's Guide. If you have more than one child you are buying for, it is more economical to get the full bundle to re-use in the future with your kids at older levels. All digital bundles come as an instant download in PDF format for you to print at home.
How long are units designed to last? Each unit is designed to be 4-6 weeks. Our main units and most of our mini units include 20 lessons and can be done as a 4-day school week (lasting 5 weeks) or a 5-day school week (lasting 4 weeks) to offer flexibility. You're in control! Set a schedule that works best for your family and your pace will dictate how quickly you complete any given unit.
Check out the Resources! Most of our units have a free resource page on our free app. These have video links for each lesson, a way to track what you have done, as well as suggested reading lists, PDF downloads, and more! Click on the button a little further down to see what we have for this unit.
