Is this a Full Unit or Mini Unit? Growing Up with God is a Mini Unit. Our Mini Units are often shorter in length or in output and while they do have crossover into multiple subjects, they are more focused and intentional on the topic of the unit. They also tend to be more hands-on with less written output. In contrast, Full Units are 20 lessons long and designed to take 4-6 weeks to complete. The Student Notebooks from Early Reader and up have 5 pages per day and are designed to cover all your subjects other than math. Some families alternate Full Units with Mini Units while others do them alongside one another.
What is this unit about? Growing Up with God is written as a personal journal for your kids. It is available in three different levels and each level comes in both a boys and girls version to make it as specific as possible so as to not expose kids to something they are not ready for. Though it is designed to be read independently by your child, you can use this however you want. Each physical level workbook is accompanied with a teaching companion in digital format for you. This will give you an overview of what your students are learning as well as their reflection questions and the conversation prompts they have. Students are prompted each day to come to you with questions to help facilitate an open-ended line of communication and a pattern that will hopefully follow them all throughout their lives. Let's take a closer look at each level and what it includes.
Level 1: Has ten chapters and covers God's original design for mankind, discretion and appropriate talk, safe and trusted people, personal anatomy, personal hygiene, puberty, emotional regulation, cultivating a relationship with God, conflict resolution, pregnancy, and protecting your purity. Level 1 is designed for kids who are around 8-10 years old or are pre-puberty (or at a more innocent level). It has watercolor illustrations of the appropriate genitalia (male genitalia for the boys' version and female genitalia for the girls' version) but does not show graphic pictures of the opposite sex. In the lesson about pregnancy, level 1 does not talk about intercourse at all and instead stays focused on fetal development and birth.
Level 2: Has ten chapters but the chapters are sometimes longer or more in depth. Students cover a similar table of contents as level 1, but in more detail with longer descriptions. This level is designed for students who are 11-14 years old or currently in puberty. It will help explain the changes that are happening to their bodies as well as what to expect in the years to come. Level 2 has some similarities in some lessons, but has much more practical and in-depth lessons in others such as hygiene and anatomy. Level 2 students will also be learning more specifically what sexual intercourse is as well as its function. While there are no graphic pictures, it does go into detail about how it works.
Level 3: This level will have more like 12 chapters in much more depth than level 1 and 2, giving it a higher page count and making it more of a complete health, anatomy, and even social studies curriculum to cover complicated topics with a biblical worldview. This level will show and talk in detail the opposite sex anatomy (using watercolor art, not photographs) as well as go into detail about intercourse and even sexual purity, dating, pornography, and more. This is recommended for middle or high school students that are through puberty and are now navigating the complications of dating and relationships, thinking about marriage one day, and preparing for adult life.
Teacher's Companion Print (Levels 1-3): For those of you who are planning on implementing the Growing Up With God series for all your students, the combined Teacher's Companion in print might be a convenient tool to have as a quick reference for what everyone is learning, what questions they might be asking, or maybe what conversation prompts you might need to start with them. Please note that each level you purchase comes with the free companion for that level in digital format. This bundled Teacher's Companion product is the only printed version that we offer.
