Is this a Full Unit or Mini Unit? Farming + Food is a Full Unit. Our Full Units are 20 lessons long and designed to take 4-6 weeks to complete. The Student Notebooks from Early Reader and up have 5 pages per day and are designed to cover all your subjects other than math. Mini Units are often shorter in length or in output and while they do have crossover into multiple subjects, they are more focused and intentional on the topic of the unit. They also tend to be more hands-on with less written output. Some families alternate Full Units with Mini Units while others do them alongside one another.
What is this unit about? In this unit, students will be learning about the journey of their food: from commercial farms to processing plants and how it arrives on the grocery store shelves we buy it from. Each lesson has a hot-button topic to address some of the deep controversy and different ideas and opinions about food, and we leave lots of open-ended discussion for you to decide as a family what you think.
Your unit project for this unit includes learning how to create a shopping list, recognizing the different prices of food and what can affect that price, observing the difference between organic vs. non-organic food, imported vs. local food, fair trade, and more. Students will create a food log, track where the food in their pantry comes from, and finish off the unit by writing, "The Story of my Food." With hands-on experiments, a blog post full of resources and videos, engaging lessons, and rich discussions, everyone is sure to enjoy their studies!

What to buy? You can purchase a leveled bundle with one student notebook of your choice and the Teacher's Guide, or the full family bundle that includes all levels with the Teacher's Guide. If you have more than one child you are buying for, it is more economical to get the full bundle to re-use in the future with your kids at older levels. All digital bundles come as an instant download in PDF format for you to print at home.
How long are units designed to last? Each unit is designed to be 4-6 weeks. Our main units and most of our mini units include 20 lessons and can be done as a 4-day school week (lasting 5 weeks) or a 5-day school week (lasting 4 weeks) to offer flexibility. You're in control! Set a schedule that works best for your family and your pace will dictate how quickly you complete any given unit.
Check out the Resources! Most of our units have a free resource page on our free app. These have video links for each lesson, a way to track what you have done, as well as suggested reading lists, PDF downloads, and more! Click on the button a little further down to see what we have for this unit.
