Is this a Full Unit or Mini Unit? Weather and Natural Disasters is a Full Unit. Our Full Units are 20 lessons long and designed to take 4–6 weeks to complete. The Student Notebooks from Early Reader and up have 5 pages per day and are designed to cover all your subjects other than math. Mini Units are often shorter in length or in output and while they do have crossover into multiple subjects, they are more focused and intentional on the topic of the unit. They also tend to be more hands-on with less written output. Some families alternate Full Units with Mini Units while others do them alongside one another.
Investigate Some Seriously Disastrous Weather!
What is this unit about? Each lesson will introduce a special kind of natural disaster and explain what made it so extreme, memorable, and catastrophic. Through every lesson, you will see unpredictable weather, but you’ll also see how it brought people together and made things safer for future storms.
What’s Inside?
Hands-on activities bring this unit to life. It’s time to put on your scientist’s thinking cap as you explore surface tension, explosive gases, speed and slope, supercooled water, and more.
Not only will you see the science behind natural disasters, you will also see how scientists use them to prevent future problems.
Daily reporting pages spotlight multiple careers including news reporting, behind the scenes tech help, and meteorologists. You’ll see the ins and outs of radio, in-studio, on-location, and podcast reporting, how greenscreens add to the segment, and the characteristics that reporters need to have in order to provide the best coverage possible.
Each lesson starts with a short story to draw you in and give you an idea of what it’s like to experience a natural disaster. We then dive in further to find out about a real event, what happened, and the lessons that were learned.
Try Out Our Comprehensive Review!
We’ve kept with our newer style of notebooking pages for this unit—each lesson has a comprehensive review, using a paragraph or specific questions to answer. We’ve even adjusted the summary wording by level to encourage reading by the youngest students. Try it out and let us know what you think!
We Hold Nothing Back!
During this study, you will dive deep into all the major subject areas (except math) and spend time uncovering the ingredients of perfect storms. Each lesson shows the destruction and heartache that weather can cause, but it also puts on display the wondrous works of God and the protection of His hand during each disaster. Due to the emphasis on disaster and catastrophe, this unit may be better suited for older students or those without a fear of extreme weather.
"God thunders wondrously with his voice; he does great things that we cannot comprehend."—Job 37:5
Prepare to see our world and its weather patterns in a whole new light! Hold on tight, it’s going to be a wild ride.

How long are units designed to last? Each unit is designed to be 4–6 weeks. Our full units and most of our mini units include 20 lessons and can be done as a 4-day school week (lasting 5 weeks) or a 5-day school week (lasting 4 weeks) to offer flexibility. You're in control! Set a schedule that works best for your family and your pace will dictate how quickly you complete any given unit.
